The dragonfly first made its appearance some 300 million years ago, almost 100 million years before the rise ofthe dinosaurs. It was one of the earliest forms of life to appear and the first to fly. With wings nearly 30 inches across it soared through the air like a hawk and was by far the largest insect that has ever lived.
