This article is from February, but I've been researching about fructose and thought it is very relevant.

A Calorie is Not a Calorie
Glucose is the form of energy you were designed to run on. Every cell in your body, every bacterium -- and in fact, every living thing on the Earth--uses glucose for energy.

If you received your fructose only from vegetables and fruits (where it originates) as most people did a century ago, you'd consume about 15 grams per day -- a far cry from the 73 grams per day the typical adolescent gets from sweetened drinks.

It's all in the triglycerides handbook. Low fat and low glycemic diets are the way to go.

If you're not consuming simple sugars (from fructose found in fruits and vegetables, which also have fiber) and you're not a professional athlete like a bicyclist or marathon runner, then you're not doing your artery, liver, pancreas, kidneys, or heart and other muscle tissues any favors.

Angel, thanks for the gentle reminder on why I don't use sugar substitutes and try to make it a habit to watch all glucose intake - it's very hard to do, that is, in giving up sugar.

"4. Avoid ALL artificial sweeteners, which can damage your health even more quickly than fructose."

I disagree about not using artificial sweetners. I feel they are a lot better for a person's health than high-fructose corn syrup.

I'm actually really glad that I grew up in the American southwest. I was raised on the staples here and personally I don't like sweets because they're just too rich...chocolate is basically my least liked food.

By and large, our foods are more spicy, even earthy, and a great deal less sweet. Spicy foods are by their very nature excellent for your heart, whereas sweets are devastating in any form.

I wonder what the comparative data is for sweets consumption in the various regions in the nation.

From everything I'm reading all sweetners are under question. I still use it, but am still reading.
