These days, it is a different story. Outside the country, Iraqi art sells well at Sotheby's ( BID - news - people ) and Bonhams' auctions--and holds place in the legendary, trend-setting collection of Iraqi-born art collector and former advertising magnate Charles Saatchi. But under American occupation, as The New York Times recently reported, artists still in Iraq struggle even harder to produce their works, let alone exhibit them. "The situation for artists inside of Iraq is very grim," says Nada Shabout, an Iraqi art expert at the University of North Texas.
